London Catholic Worker

The London Catholic Worker consists of two community based house of hospitality; Dorothy Day house in Hackney, London and The Catholic Worker Farm in West Hyde, Hertfordshire. Both communities host 'round table' discussions with non-residential members.

Dorothy Day house community currently has 2 core members and 6 guests and have a drop-in centre in Hackney. The Catholic Worker farm has one family (2 children and four adults); they have 5 guests and are working towards a self-sustaining lifestyle with permaculture gardening. Both houses practice the 'works of mercy' and resistance to all forms of violence.

Maria Albrecht (45) is a Third Order Franciscan; She is a College Lecturer in Computer Technology, and has accompanied homeless men and women. She has a PGCE and a Diploma in Compassionate Ministry from the Diocese of Chicago in the USA.   The Albrecht family consists of Scott and Maria and their four children. Resident: CW Farm.

Scott Albrecht (45) is a Third Order Franciscan and a Chaplain; he holds a MA in Peace Studies, BA in Theology for Ministry and a Diploma in Counseling (Mill Hill). He has accompanied homeless men as well as teenagers who have abused illegal substances. He has been arrested on numerous occasions for issues of justice. Resident: CW Farm.

Steve Barnes (32) Associated with Simon community living & working with homeless people over the past 6 years. Visited Boston CW for three months. He has worked with Voices and other anti-war and social justice organisations. Steve is interested in Buddhist meditation and philosophy.

Angela Broome (67) lives and has worked since the 1960's in the East End of London, where the majority population is now Muslim, with origins in Bangladesh and Somalia. Since introduction as a student to the anti-nuclear movement and the Fellowship of Reconcilliation, she has been struggling to engage non-violent mindfulness with real life. personal and political. development of mediation skills is a current aspect of this. Angela is a life-long Christian in the Anglican tradition.

Chris Goodchild(40), native of London, has done extensive recovery work with people suffering from addictions (AA), he is also a well qualified practitioner of the Alexander Technique, which he was making available to low income earners based in central London.

Zelda Jeffers (21+), Atheist and Anarchist, she feels comfortable with the CW philosophy. She has worked in Nicaragua and Brazil helping to train health workers in poor rural communities. Zelda has taken part in many nonviolent direct actions including the "DSEi Blood Stained Action" and at Shannon Airport, Ireland("Shannon Banshees").Resident: Dorothy Day House.
   
Martin Newell (38), Passionist based in Hackney, London. Jubilee Ploughshares activist. He took part in his first act of 'civil responsibility', which led to arrest with 8 Timorese on the airfield at BAE Wharton. He was part of Jubilee Ploughshares disarmament of a nuclear weapons convoy vehicle at RAF Wittering. Resident: Dorothy Day House.

Simon Watson (41) has a long-standing concern to help homeless people and bring Jesus' message of non-violence to anyone who is willing to receive it. He is a life-long Christian (Conservative Quaker) and anarchist committed to the belief that the work of building God's Kingdom on earth is done best when governments get out the Lord's way. He has been involved in London Catholic Worker since 2005 and lives with his wife and son in Greenwich.
